Using YouTube to put videos on your website

Using YouTube to place videos in your website

This is written for tour operators looking for instruction and benefits of online video and using Youtube as a resource.

These movies should be annotated on your gallery/video page as short reality videos taken by your guides / guests and showing highlights of the trip. As noted this is not necessarily meant to replace a high quality production video, however trends indicate that consumers value “real” media more than production /edited media.
That said make sure your video has good content showing terrain, happy clients, trip highlights.

General Points:
- Video is a key conversion factor for travel websites particularly for adventure tour operators whose product is the combination of terrain and experience within that terrain.
- Keep them short 3-5 minutes – and list the time beside the video – viewers appreciate that.
- Title and describe the video on your webpage so viewers know what to expect and which one they want to watch.
- Videos are great on Gallery / Video pages – but also try embedding them right beside the trip that the video is about!
- Make sure you include a release for “likeness, photos/videos “in your client waivers.
- Google is adding rank points for video content.
- Include your company name and contact info in the video “footer/frame”
Benefits of using this format:
-No need for users to download a video player-YouTube stores your videos saving your server space
-Google will add to your ranking for using embedded videos with tags
-Easy and free!

You Tube points:
-Name video and describe it
-Include your company name, trip name, geography, activity type in the tag section –anything you would normally enter into Google to tag your site.
-You may consider not letting people take your video – this is a business decision , however remember you can email the You Tube code to your partners even if you check off not to allow people to take your code.
-Choose category of Travel
-Once you upload video YouTube spits out the code

– if you use a webmaster, paste the code into a word doc with the text describing it and a the video name (length etc) that you want your webmaster to include

SUMMARY: Make your website an effective tool with rich content like photos, slide shows to allow clients to visualize themselves on your tour. Add confidence with testimonials, awards, PR and speaking engagements. Include incentive offers they can share with friends. Include descriptives of prerequisites if you have them as well as daily itineraries so clients know what to expect. Make sure you provide dates AND availability online! This is critical – for the end consumer shopping after hours the prospect of having to call a bunch of operators to find out if they have trips available when they want to go is a daunting and frustrating task. Statistically shoppers will shortlist calls to operators they have already done diligence on with knowledge the operator has trips available when they want to go vs. “wasting a call” to find out about dates. They want to make calls to finalize whether they want to use the operator – not to find out dates. Respect the shopper and convert them to a buyer.
Plus make sure you have the ability to put your trips on partner sites too! (hotels, transportation companies etc )

Community tourism, technology and sustainable travel

An unlikely combination?
We don't think so.

New technology can bring massive opportunities for small investments (or even better free!)
Small rural operators and their communities can use technology to better facilitate coordinated marketing and sales promotions.
Small operators can gain big company tools like online sales, international distribution, merchant accounts and administration system.

What about sustainability?
One of the components of sustainable tourism is support and protection of the communities visited. One of the best ways of doing this is utilizing local companies, local resources when you travel. The question becomes how the heck do you find small, quality tour operators in the regions you are visiting?
Definitely visit the local tourism association websites, government tourism sites displaying members.

Form our experience at Adventure engine we have the pleasure of working with small to large companies world wide.
Small local tour operators often provide an incredibly authentic and often world class product.
They are worth finding.

As for how communities can work to better bundle and promote their tourism products we have ideas there too.
