Adventure Engine is a finalist for both the TIAC (Tourism Industry Association of Canada) Innovator of the Year Award and the Canadian E Tourism Awards.
Adventure Engine has developed cutting edge new technology that is easy and affordable for tour operators internationally. Their use of XML and advanced distribution to travel agents is part of the reason the company has been recognized in several prestigious awards in 2007.Adventure Engine also promotes environmental practices, offering carbon offset options to all operators guests via their partnership with Sustainable Travel International. Furthermore the company supports sustainable practices by providing network capacity for rural tourism organizations and affordable solutions to small operators.

"We're building the bridge to make it easier for consumers to find these incredible trips," says Acheson. "Now people can search and book them on our Adventure Engine database, on a growing number of other travel websites and soon, on hundreds of thousands of travel agents' own booking systems.""Our company mandate is to serve all sizes of tourism operations so we have small single season operators in the system being distributed and sold along side large international providers, " notes Amber. "It makes us happy to know we are providing these types of opportunities to tour operators with a new technology that is powerful yet accessible."

Canadas e-Connect Tourism Conference

Heads up to all of our Canadian viewers and subscribers. Here is a great opportunity to learn and network during an exciting Canadian event.

The Canadian Tourism Commission is supporting a great conference coming up in November ~ ready to provide you with online strategies, info and resources.
It is good to see support for Canadian travel providers who want to make the most of online opportunities.

"The Canada-e-Connect e-Tourism Strategy Conference is all-about strengthening Canada’s tourism industry profile. We do this by mixing in two key ingredients: a supportive environment that encourages different tourism sectors to collaborate and the latest know-how so they can adopt e-marketing into their mix with finesse. It’s that simple and fun.
The Canada-e-Connect e-Tourism Strategy Conference is also held in conjunction with the first ever Canadian e-Tourism Awards. These prestigious new awards recognize excellence in website design, online campaigns and innovation for three sectors: public, private and small- and medium-sized enterprise. Recognition is also going out to travelers by showcasing the best in user-generated content with awards for the best story telling, the best photo, and the best video or short-film. Entries are being accepted from July 15 to August 31."

Travel is the largest type of product sold online

We are always trying to bring home the importance of online sales here at http://www.adventureengine.com/.

There are many examples of this trend, here are a couple to add to your marketing and web strategy outlines:

"Travel is by far the largest type of product bought online, making up nearly one-third of all online purchases, according to the survey of 174 online retailers."Source:

The Canadian Tourism Commission recently featured an article in their Tourism Daily newsletter about online search behaviour. According to a recent survey for Yahoo! Canada, over 90 per cent of Canadian travel consumers use online resources to learn, explore and book travel. In fact, the survey found that Canadian travellers are more likely to use search engines when planning trips than consulting family or friends.

Using YouTube to put videos on your website

Using YouTube to place videos in your website

This is written for tour operators looking for instruction and benefits of online video and using Youtube as a resource.

These movies should be annotated on your gallery/video page as short reality videos taken by your guides / guests and showing highlights of the trip. As noted this is not necessarily meant to replace a high quality production video, however trends indicate that consumers value “real” media more than production /edited media.
That said make sure your video has good content showing terrain, happy clients, trip highlights.

General Points:
- Video is a key conversion factor for travel websites particularly for adventure tour operators whose product is the combination of terrain and experience within that terrain.
- Keep them short 3-5 minutes – and list the time beside the video – viewers appreciate that.
- Title and describe the video on your webpage so viewers know what to expect and which one they want to watch.
- Videos are great on Gallery / Video pages – but also try embedding them right beside the trip that the video is about!
- Make sure you include a release for “likeness, photos/videos “in your client waivers.
- Google is adding rank points for video content.
- Include your company name and contact info in the video “footer/frame”
Benefits of using this format:
-No need for users to download a video player-YouTube stores your videos saving your server space
-Google will add to your ranking for using embedded videos with tags
-Easy and free!

You Tube points:
-Name video and describe it
-Include your company name, trip name, geography, activity type in the tag section –anything you would normally enter into Google to tag your site.
-You may consider not letting people take your video – this is a business decision , however remember you can email the You Tube code to your partners even if you check off not to allow people to take your code.
-Choose category of Travel
-Once you upload video YouTube spits out the code

– if you use a webmaster, paste the code into a word doc with the text describing it and a the video name (length etc) that you want your webmaster to include

For example: An adventure engine description would be : http://www.adventureengine.com/movies_inset.htm
Video Title: Critical components to convert shoppers to buyers on your travel web site ( 3 min 20 secs) Overviews use of rich media, online sales and reservation systems for travel and adventure operator websites. This video is only 3:30 min long and shows examples from one of our suppliers websites Watch via Quick time better video quality Critical Components for your site ( 3 min) Sample YouTube code:

SUMMARY: Make your website an effective tool with rich content like photos, slide shows to allow clients to visualize themselves on your tour. Add confidence with testimonials, awards, PR and speaking engagements. Include incentive offers they can share with friends. Include descriptives of prerequisites if you have them as well as daily itineraries so clients know what to expect. Make sure you provide dates AND availability online! This is critical – for the end consumer shopping after hours the prospect of having to call a bunch of operators to find out if they have trips available when they want to go is a daunting and frustrating task. Statistically shoppers will shortlist calls to operators they have already done diligence on with knowledge the operator has trips available when they want to go vs. “wasting a call” to find out about dates. They want to make calls to finalize whether they want to use the operator – not to find out dates. Respect the shopper and convert them to a buyer.
Plus make sure you have the ability to put your trips on partner sites too! (hotels, transportation companies etc )

Then mail this to your webmaster.
To see the summary video (ok this is an example of a bad recording which i will re record ;)

Community tourism, technology and sustainable travel

An unlikely combination?
We don't think so.

New technology can bring massive opportunities for small investments (or even better free!)
Small rural operators and their communities can use technology to better facilitate coordinated marketing and sales promotions.
Small operators can gain big company tools like online sales, international distribution, merchant accounts and administration system.

What about sustainability?
One of the components of sustainable tourism is support and protection of the communities visited. One of the best ways of doing this is utilizing local companies, local resources when you travel. The question becomes how the heck do you find small, quality tour operators in the regions you are visiting?
Definitely visit the local tourism association websites, government tourism sites displaying members.
If you want to be really diligent about a sustainable tour choice also visit sites like http://www.sustainabletourism.org/

Form our experience at Adventure engine we have the pleasure of working with small to large companies world wide.
Small local tour operators often provide an incredibly authentic and often world class product.
They are worth finding.

As for how communities can work to better bundle and promote their tourism products we have ideas there too.
Certainly there are free tools like Googleearth, YouTube, Blogger and more that should be taken advantage of and there are companies like Adventureengine that also subsidize rural tourism programs to ensure accessibility for rural tour operators.

Making a community plan is also critical.

What are some of the components we see here that helps small communities and operators and what common barriers do we see?

1. Background
It is no surprise that many of the adventure travel operators we work with at Adventure Engine operate from rural locations. We have found these locations to present many benefits and challenges in developing, maintaining and growing a community product. The term 'community' can be used to describe a township, province, state or even at the national level.

2. Common Community Goals
Attract more tourists to the region while maintaining the authenticity and lifestyle of that community. Improve online presence and functionality to meet the increasing trends in visitors researching and buying travel online.

3. Benefits of Community based tourism
Economic development
Alternative to non renewable industry
Higher wages and improved standard of living amongst local population
The creation of new jobs
Increased retail and commodity purchases
Stabilization of the local economy

4. Associated Risks
Loss of authenticity in local product
Changes to local lifestyle and culture
Over-development
Threat to local habitat and wildlife
Economic drain by large corporate providers without contribution to local resources

5. Common Methodologies
Community planning and tourism strategy
Community partnerships
Cooperative marketing and packaging
Website marketing

6. Common Barriers
Technology and Training
Building and maintaining a website and database is not within the resources of the community
The community lacks up to date knowledge of industry trends and buying behaviour
Local operators lack the budget and/or technical skills to cope with large upgrades
Concern of perceived bias

Budget
Often rural communities lack the budget to optimize online marketing or to compete with large urban or international locations
Budget is also a common barrier to building and maintaining visitor infrastructure including communication networks, staffing, office equipment and more

Partnerships
Many communities find the local population views partnerships as competitive rather than collaborative
Communities often identify partnerships as being important in their tourism strategy, but may not be able to identify current and potential partnerships consistently

7. Benefits to using a system like Adventure Engine
Main AE features that Community/Chambers appreciate
helps meet mandates for members
easy to use and install
adds no extra workload for your staff, Adventure Engine manages the campaign and member training.
provides a more proactive presence and role for the association to promote and sell member seats.
meets exposure for both local and international visitors
presents a low barrier to entry and is accessible to all operators

Technology and Training
Give your community members opportunities to access a reservation and inventory management system that is incredibly powerful and customizable yet affordable and easy to use. The can gain the technology to bring their companies to the cutting edge of the industry. The Adventure Engine system is a web based application that does not require expensive software and can be used by anyone with a computer and internet connection. The staff at Adventure Engine is focused on creating technology that matches industry trends and requirements. We will train all operators individually and provide ongoing free technical and customer support. AE is also available to work with communities to develop action plans and strategies which ensure optimal implementation for that group. We ensure the system is easy to use and support all of our subscribers.

Overcome Bias
Adventure Engine also allows you to implement such a system without perceived bias. Overcoming perceived bias for many communities means offering equal opportunities to members regardless of size, budget and technical knowledge. Adventure Engine staff can work with each community member individually to ensure they are able to participate in the program. This ensures all members have an OPTION, which prevents bias from entering the discussion.Once loaded, your storefront or portal will display community products based on consumer search constraints and departure dates, also preventing any perceived bias or favouritism.

Budget
Registration with Adventure Engine involves no upfront free for all suppliers to load unlimited trips onto. They pay only a 1% transaction fee for transactions. Standard credit card fees apply. This helps ensure the program is accessible to community members and encourages participation in the network and results in market penetration for local product. For smaller local operators it is a constant struggle to gain exposure. By providing technology to have local products shown easily on existing partner sites and new Adventure Engine distributor sites we can help the local operator compete. This is important to draw visitors to your community and to keep the revenue with your local operators rather than larger external operators who may not leave revenue with your community. There is also a option to not fully adopt the reservation system rather use the system to gain the benefit of marketing, distribution and online sales network for $375.For communities creating a portal area for their region (over 3 operators) registration with Adventure Engine costs only $600 CAN for local communities (half of our regular price). With this registration you receive free and unlimited technical and customer support.

Partnerships
Partnerships are important to communities to combine the traffic of multiple websites, and to package local products. Managing these partnerships (inventory management between partner companies) is administratively effective using one centralized database. Traditional partnerships using the phone and fax machine are no longer viable as human resource hours greatly outweigh the profits realized by partners. Adventure Engine can allow networks to grow without the administrative weight within communities and internationally.

FACT: comprise 40% of all business travelers, influence 80% of all luxury and family travel, own 38% of all US businesses contributing $1.6 trillion to the national economy, and have now reached 59% of all Internet users. http://www.roadandtravel.com/company/marketing/marketresearch.htm

If you are not sure about how to attract, encourage and convert this demographic adventure engine is ready to help out!

We are hosting a free online seminar June 27th at 12 noon PDT to cover all the do's and don'ts of marketing to this group.

The session is brought to you by Amber Hayes, Industry specialist and CEO, Adventure Engine -and Kathy Dragon a travel demographic expert.

Kathy Moyer Dragon, Founder and Owner of The Dragon's Path, ActiveWomen.com and now a consultant with Eons.com, has spent the past two decades in the center of the active and adventure travel industry. Having researched, designed, marketed, sold and then personally escorted and facilitated the travel experiences of over 3000 guests on small group adventure and cultural trips around the globe Kathy will discuss how baby boomers and women are changing today’s travel landscape from what products they want (can’t stand or wish for) to how different generations of travelers perceive themselves in today’s active travel environment. All these questions and answers have changed over the past decade as the womens and boomer travel market has evolved and yes, redefined the travel industry.

Participation just requires a phone, a computer and an internet connection and you can watch the demo from the comfort of your own office. Space is limited and early registration is recommended.

Critical Online Travel Tools to convert Lookers to Bookers

Adventure Engine Opens Lucrative Online Door

Introducing Travel Connect 2.0Tour operators of all sizes now have an easy, cost- effective way to offer and manage their adventure and experiential tour inventory on-line. Adventure Engine Inc.'s new TRAVEL CONNECT 2.0 uses a standard XML schema specifically for tour operators in the adventure industry.
"Adventure Engine's new technology makes the adventure travel market accessible to travel agents who could not previously access these popular tours, despite the growing demand for them," says CEO Amber Hayes. A majority of boomers consider themselves adventurous (55%) and nearly 8 in 10 boomers (77%) consider their own travel experiences more adventurous than those of their parents.* Many are looking to fulfill life-long dreams.
Adventure Engine helps operators and agents effectively meet that thirst for adventure and cultural, spiritual or educational experiences by managing all aspects of tour operators' agent interfaces, partners and distribution channels, including on-line sales. A single XML feed, managed by Adventure Engine, will dramatically improve operations and reduce costs for operators.
Adventure Engine has aggregated over 1500 adventure and experiential travel trips onto a centralized database (GDS - global distribution system). The firm can now take that content and negotiate API (Application Interfaces) and large distributor agreements, putting their client's trips in front of tens of thousands of travel agents. Real-time available seat inventory is loaded, making it easy for agents, resellers, distributors or partners to book trips. When a seat is booked, the inventory is updated automatically on both the Adventure Engine database and the supplier's own reservation system, using XML schema technology.
For more information on Adventure Engine's distribution solutions, content management, reservation systems and how to tap into their database of commissionable trips, check out their brand new web site at www.adventureengine.com.
